Pine Knoll Shores

The rich history of this beautiful coastal community goes as far back as the Florentine explorer Giovanni Da Verrazzano, who explored much of the North Carolina coast in his expedition along America's eastern coast. Pine Knoll Shores is thought to be one of the first places he landed in the New World, and the mark is documented with an historic marker along the main highway.

The area was developed by Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., who was willed the area after Alice Hoffman's death. Hoffman owned the area from Atlantic Beach to Emerald Isle. With and ecologically focused direction, the town was developed and remains sensitive to the surrounding environment. The North Carolina Aquarium fittingly resides here and with over one million animals in the enormous building, a touch tank, auditorium two nature trails and gift shop you can spend an entire day just exploring the wonders of the coast.

The people living in this area are exceptionally aware of the surrounding environment and work hard to ensure the preservation of the area. They continue to protect ocean dunes and the maritime forest locates along the bank. Because of their community and environmentally focused perspective, much of the area today remains unspoiled and pristine, and Pine Knoll Shores has been designated a "Tree City USA." With nearly 1700 local residents, the summer months bring in a major influx of tourists and provide much of the commerce to the area.

At the central most point of the Bogue Banks, Pine Knoll Shores offers an unforgettable experience to vacationers. The residential community of Pine Knoll Shores spans nearly two square miles. This barrier island is surrounded by the bustling Atlantic Beach, Indian Beach, the Bogue Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.
