Travel Information for Seniors

Welcome to the Crystal Coast. This beautiful island, home to Emerald Isle, Salter Path, Indian Beach, Atlantic Beach and Pine Knoll Shores, has been featured in national press including by USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. The area is known for providing a vacation getaway that offers an atmosphere that offers something for all members of the family. Whatever your needs, they can be met here.

Seniors and retirees find a comfortable atmosphere sprinkled with sunshine and fun. The winters are mild and the days are long. This makes gardening, golfing, fishing or just walking on the beach a daily pleasure. During the late summer or fall season the rates are reasonable, which makes the area even more attractive to seniors. As our seasons turn golden and our population turns silver, more activities become available for you to enjoy. There is a variety of sports, hobbies, entertainment as well as rewarding volunteer work.

Housing complexes such as condominiums provide trouble free living, away from the daily chores of maintaining a home. We also have housing units exclusively dedicated to the elderly. These range from federally subsidized units for those on fixed incomes, to exclusive assisted living facilities that offer meals, transportation, laundry and 24 hour security and medical needs. For those in need of critical care there are nursing homes and hospital facilities.

For our lucky retirees who are footloose and fancy free, and have the luxury of traveling in a camper or RV, we have three campgrounds available. The Arrowhead Campsite is located in Indian Beach. Arrowhead Campsite is just a short walk away the blue-green waters of the Atlantic Ocean gently roll on clean and wide white sandy beaches. The beach offers excellent surf fishing, sunbathing, shelling, or just plain relaxing. They have 170 campsites with over 135 full hookups, 30 Amp service and free cable TV service. There is a convenience store for those things you may forget to bring. There are many fine restaurants and gift shops in the area and some are within easy walking distance.

The Bogue Banks area offers several golf courses, tennis courts, ocean fishing piers, and a world-famous charter boat fleet available for offshore fishing. Also on Bogue Banks you may want to visit historic Fort Macon and the NC Aquarium where you can view exhibits of coastal NC flora and fauna.

Within one hour's drive of the campground are many other interesting attractions. Among them are historic Beaufort, the third oldest town in NC (1713), historic New Bern and Tryon Palace, the U.S. Marine Bases at Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune. They are about one hour from the Cedar Island - Ocracoke ferry and are an ideal stopping place for those heading North or South on this ferry.

Salter Path Family Campground has sites on both the ocean and the sound. The facility boasts sites with electricity, water, cable hookups and picnic tables. Internet service is available as well as showers, sports centers, a camp store, a boat ramp, a pond and a dump station. They also have two campers available to rent. You can rent clam rakes or fishing gear and staff members are always around to help you clean your catch and even suggest great recipes to enjoy your treasure. It is within walking distance to restaurants, shops or grocery stores. It is open from mid March thru mid November, with fees of $26 - $42, depending on the exact location. There is an additional fee for any person in excess of two.

Holiday Trav-L-Park Resort is located at the intersection of Route 58 and Route 24. It offers 375 sites with full hook ups, as well as a long list of amenities. These include cable, laundry and shower facilities, an outdoor swimming pool, a recreation room, bicycle and go-cart rentals, a playground and child’s amusement park.
